Is the Government Really Going Cut Off 42 Million People?

We are already trying to manage an ongoing assault on Medicaid and other programs that exist only to help people in need, in spite of the absurdity of such a concept.  Now, inexplicably and shamefully, it appears the federal government is about to deny 42 million people the benefit that helps them buy food.  A benefit they rely on to survive.  A benefit they have already been qualified to receive.  Well, if this isn’t the lowest point that we can reach as a country then I shudder to think about what could top it.

The SNAP program is the benefit that assists people who qualify for the program, including many people living with disabilities and people living in poverty, to buy food they could otherwise not afford to buy on their own.  This program has existed uninterrupted for 60 years and has been a literal lifeline for millions of Americans.  Now, for no legitimate reason, the people who receive SNAP benefits will be shut out on November 1st and those people can do absolutely nothing about it.  It’s disgraceful.

More than 16 million of those who will be cut off from SNAP are children.  Let that sink in for a moment.  The government seems prepared to let over 16 million children lose access to food.  Instead of looking out for children who need to eat, a choice has been made to sacrifice them in service to some idiotic ideological battle that no 7-year old knows anything about.  Those kids know what hunger feels like, though.  In what reality is it acceptable to turn our backs on children who need food?  There isn’t a person alive today who can legitimately defend that position.

Oddly enough, there is still time to stop the madness and avert this social catastrophe.  The federal government has a day and a half to get off their asses and do the right thing and help the people who need help.  Keep in mind, this is not a financial issue.  The money needed to fund the SNAP program exists and can be released by Congress through ending the shutdown or through an alternative appropriation action.  It is not hard.  A day and a half to either do the right thing or to look the other way while one of the greatest betrayals of the public trust in history hits 42 million innocent people.  Hurry up, Congress!
