The Impact of Losing SNAP Benefits on People with Disabilities and the Community

At Venture, we serve individuals with disabilities who rely on essential supports to live with dignity and independence. Among those we serve, roughly 190 individuals depend on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to meet their basic nutritional needs. SNAP not only provides access to healthy food but also helps stabilize other aspects of daily life, such as health, employment, and community participation.

If these individuals were to lose their SNAP benefits, the impact would be immediate and far-reaching. Many people with disabilities live on fixed or limited incomes, often relying on Social Security or other supports. Without SNAP, they would face increased food insecurity, forced to choose between purchasing groceries or paying for medication, housing, and transportation. Poor nutrition can also worsen existing health conditions, increasing medical costs and reducing overall quality of life.

The loss of SNAP benefits would not only harm individuals but also affect the broader community. Increased food insecurity can lead to higher demand for local food pantries and charitable organizations, straining community resources. It can also lead to poorer health outcomes, which increase public healthcare costs and reduce workforce participation. At its core, SNAP is an investment in the well-being and inclusion of vulnerable populations. When that safety net is weakened, the entire community feels the effects.

In short, protecting access to SNAP for people with disabilities is not only a matter of compassion it is a matter of community stability and shared responsibility.
